Soulscape 9, Art Is the Heartbeat of Culture
From My Upcoming Book: Soulscape – The Role of Art in Our Lives
Edgar Degas, The Orchestra of the Opera, 1870-1871. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Wikimedia Commons.
In Edgar Degas' The Orchestra of the Opera, from our front-row seat, we become part of the energy flowing between the musicians, the dancers, and the performance in this vibrant cultural event. The orchestra, dressed in crisp black suits and white shirts, stands in stark contrast to the ballerinas, whose delicate limbs and pink and blue costumes are brilliantly lit. This exquisite depiction of music, dance, high contrast, light, and our engagement embodies what it means to participate in a vivacious culture.
Art is a window to our future.

I had forgotten how wonderful this painting is- like you can hear the music in the light and dark contrasts
What a wonderful painting! It reminds me a little bit of John Singer Sargent's work. It's a bit impressionistic while having that "immersive" style I like. Thanks for sharing!
