Soulscape 24, Art Challenges Us to Dream Beyond Limits
From My Upcoming Book: Soulscape – The Role of Art in Our Lives
Bryan Larsen, Chrysalis, 2022.
Perhaps the greatest value of art is that it can show us what our positive future could look like. In Bryan Larsen’s painting Chrysalis, we see two girls, probably sisters, closely inspecting an insect cocoon in their hands. Symbolically, they are also at an early stage of development. The girls are standing on a beautifully landscaped slope.
But it is the background that reveals they are in a circular, glass-covered space station, with Earth and the Moon visible in the distance. This suggests that in our future, many technical problems have been solved—for instance, how to create a natural, livable environment in space. Through art, we can imagine how one day this could become reality.
Art is a window to our future.
