Soulscape 15, Art Speaks What Words Cannot
From My Upcoming Book: Soulscape – The Role of Art in Our Lives
Leonardo da Vinci, Mona Lisa (detail of smile), 1503–1506, Louvre Museum, Paris. WC.
Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa captures a subtle, enigmatic expression that has fascinated both viewers and artists for centuries. The serene curve of her lips conveys mystery, inviting countless speculations. Years ago, I was given a private tour of the Louvre, where I had the opportunity to stand up close to the Mona Lisa for several minutes. I was struck by a technical aspect: the way her lips were painted with minute detail, composed of delicate planes of color. Another thing that is rarely noticed when looking at her smile are the forms around the lips—they do more to convey the nuance of the smile than the mouth itself. Leonardo's ability to seamlessly integrate form, details, light, and line brings life to her expression, which miraculously seems to change under the viewer’s gaze. This painting quietly conveys how art speaks what words cannot.
Art is a window to our future.
