Newberry, Neutra House, 2010, pastel on red paper, 18x24"
A modern technique for a modern house? The way I work pastel is to ask, "warmer or cooler?" For each choice. Starting with red paper is kinda mind-bending. For instance the blue sky in this pastel is violet, but on the red paper it feels blue ie. the violet is cooler than the red paper. The same with the vegetation, green would have been too harsh with the red paper, so I used some browns that were cooler and yellower than the red paper. Insanely exciting when the whole piece works together, and crazy mental work, especially when there is less than an hour to draw before the light changes too much.
