Newberry, Gold Santa Monica Apartment Building, pastel
Treat the dark side as insignificant and it will reward us by making light all the more powerful.
Seeking light is like the hungry pursuing for a satisfying meal. With both there is a sigh of contentment in its consumption. One fuels the body, the other fuels the soul.
With this pastel on dark paper it not only possible to cheat, I relished it. Light on paper is about 1/1000th the strength of looking at a bright direct light, shadows are about 1/100th the brightness of light on paper. To give this drawing a feeling of real light, I downplayed the shadows so much so they hold almost no information. I let the paper do most the work just by leaving them alone and barely touching them. By doing this it lets the light breath freely.
The moral of the story is: treat the dark side as insignificant and it will reward us by making light all the more powerful.
