Newberry, Eve Ink Study Right Cheek
The Eve Study Series in Ink and White Chalk
The properties of light and shadow are very different in the sense of detail, color theory, vagueness vs. lavish information. Shadows are like entering a mysterious underworld, a little like those 4 am bars, that people go to after partying, with their very dim lights, like if you covered a candle's light with a dark maroon filter. While the light section is like stepping into bright daylight, and like magic you can see an abundance of information down to tiny details. The light side has about 10 times more of everything, more color, more detail, more range of tones. And the shadow side is pure ether. Blows me away every moment I paint. Like getting the best of heaven and hell. ; )
There is a bit about Van Gogh, when he was at the height of his work, that he was engaged with the brush marks following the forms of things. The conflicting thing with realism and gesture, is the more you make marks in paint the less real it looks... nice tricky problem, and it depends on what I want to accomplish.
I am going to share the rest of the Eve drawings, they are all pretty good.
